Why I Chose Web Design: Courage, Service, and Creativity

January 5, 2025

Starting my own business in website design wasn’t an overnight decision. In fact, it was a process of showing up for myself, overcoming my own doubts, and finding the courage to take up space in a world that often feels crowded. But along the way, I discovered that designing websites isn’t just about building beautiful pages; it’s about creating a platform for people to confidently show up in their own businesses and lives. Here’s why I chose this path, and why it brings me so much fulfillment.

1. The Power of Showing Up in a Crowded Space

For a long time, I hesitated to take up space—both online and in my personal life. I was often paralyzed by the thought of standing out in a world that already seemed oversaturated with voices, ideas, and competition. I’m sure many of you can relate. Putting yourself out there for the world to see is both thrilling and terrifying. But it was in facing that fear head-on that I realized just how important it is to show up—especially when it feels like the last thing you want to do.

One of the most powerful aspects of having a professional website is the sense of credibility and professionalism it can provide. It’s the digital equivalent of walking into a room with your head held high, ready to share your unique gifts with the world. I understand the hesitation of wanting to take that first step, but I also know that it can be the catalyst that propels you forward.

When you finally take up space, you may never know who you are inspiring or impacting. You might be showing up for someone who needs to hear your story, see your work, or connect with your energy. That’s why I do what I do: to help you have the tools to show up with confidence, no matter how crowded the space feels. The courage to show up can spark something beautiful, and it’s an honor to be part of that process.

2. Supporting Others on Their Entrepreneurial Journey

One of the reasons I love this business is that I’m able to support other entrepreneurs who, like me, are looking for something beyond the traditional 9-5 grind. I get to help those who are yearning for freedom, flexibility, and a life that aligns with their calling. Being a small business owner is non-traditional, and it’s not always easy, but it’s a journey toward something deeply fulfilling.

Many of my clients are stepping into entrepreneurship because they believe in their own gifts and have a strong desire to build something that reflects who they are. Helping them build a website that is a true representation of their work, their passion, and their purpose is a deeply rewarding experience. My role as a web designer goes beyond just making things look pretty—it’s about empowering others to bring their dreams to life.

Knowing that I’m playing a part in someone else’s journey toward freedom and fulfillment is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. Whether it’s a coach, an artist, or a service provider, their success is a reflection of how I’ve been able to support them in stepping into their own power. And that’s something I’m incredibly proud of.

3. The “Service Loop” – Impact That Goes Beyond Clients

One of the things I love most about being a B2B (business-to-business) service provider is the idea of the “service loop.” When I design a website for a client, I’m not just helping that one person or business—I’m helping them reach and support their own audience. And their audience will then go on to support others. The reach is exponential.

This is something I’ve always understood from my years as an elementary school dean. When I was in the classroom, my impact was limited to my group of 27 students. But when I moved into coaching teachers, my impact expanded far beyond just one classroom. I was able to support educators who, in turn, were able to support dozens of students.

In the same way, my role as a web designer feels like I’m part of a much larger ecosystem. By supporting one entrepreneur, I help them reach countless others who are benefiting from their products, services, or expertise. It’s a beautiful cycle of service that extends my impact in a way that goes beyond just the work I do directly. This is the “service loop,” and it makes me proud to be a website designer.

4. Creativity Every Single Day

Before I ventured into web design, I had a constant itch for creativity. I loved the idea of blending both art and science—and in web design, that’s exactly what I get to do. Every day, I get to flex both my creative muscles and my strategic mind.

Web design is an art form—you’re creating something visually appealing that also communicates a message. But it’s also about problem-solving, which I find incredibly rewarding. It’s about finding solutions that not only look beautiful but work flawlessly for the end user.

Designing websites allows me to scratch that creative itch in a way that is both personal and professional. It feels like I’m constantly learning and growing, and there’s always a new challenge to tackle. And that balance between creativity and strategy is what keeps me excited about this business.

5. The Balance of Art and Science

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts, you know how much I love the balance between aesthetic beauty and strategic thinking—or as I like to call it, art and science. This is what makes web design so unique. It’s not just about designing something that looks good; it’s about making sure it works well, too.

Every project I take on is a chance to marry design principles with technical know-how. I get to play with color, typography, and layout, while also thinking through functionality, user experience, and conversion goals. The process feels like a perfect blend of the right and left brain, and that’s something I truly love about my work.

Choosing web design as my business venture was a decision rooted in my own journey of self-discovery. I wanted to take up space in a crowded world, empower others to do the same, and creatively contribute to something bigger than myself. It’s a profession that allows me to support other entrepreneurs, be a part of the service loop that extends far beyond my clients, and continue to explore my own creative potential.

Building websites isn’t just about the design—it’s about helping people show up with confidence, live their dreams, and impact others. Every website I design is a tool for someone to build their vision and take their business to the next level, and that’s what makes my work meaningful.
